has become the member of
UN-Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID)
Recently United Nations has founded Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID) to taking effective measure for development of ICT and its appropriate implementation in mankind. Shortly its called GAID. The administration of GAID consists in two levels. Lower level has Administrative Council and at higher level there is Strategy Council. The total number of member in Strategy Council is 60. Among them 30 are government bodies, rest of 30 has 10 for private sector, civil society and UN and international bodies each.
Chief Executive Officer of BNNRC Mr. AHM. Bazlur Rahman has selected as a member of Strategy Council in the quota for civil society. This is a huge achievement for Bangladesh in the field of ICTfor development. Beside Bangladesh, Japan is another selected member of GAID Strategy Council from Asia region.
The first meeting of GAID Strategy Council is going to held in 19th-20th June 2006 in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. Mr. AHM. Bazlur Rahman has joined there as an elected member. It is mentionable that earlier Mr. AHM. Bazlur Rahman has been contributed as the founder member of Bangladesh Working Group on World Summit on the Information Society(WSIS) headed by Bangladesh Government, which organized by United Nations 2003 and 2005. He is one of the pioneers in the field of development communication and ICT for development.He has been working to establish information and knowledge based society in Bangladesh for the last two decade.
He has been selected for the GAID Strategy Council through a process. The Conference of NGO’s In Consultative Relationship with the United Nation (CONGO) has collected a list of 198 people from all through the world. In this selection procedure main considerable points were experience in ICT and its development, goal, interest, relative ideas about UN’s working and implementation strategy. After that jurors select 63 from 198 for first judging, later 21 from 63 and finally 10 from 21 has been selected.
The duty of Strategy Council would be combination of ICT in the total development procedure of UN, building up healthy relationship between the organizations working in the field of ICT for Development in different countries, and developing awareness among the policy makers of the countries. The elected members also give advice to Secretary General of UN.
BNNRC will call a discussion meeting with the persons and organizations that are related with ICT for Development in Bangladesh to ensure the effective role of BNNRC in the process of GAID.
